C-SPAN Celebrates 30 Years of Senate Coverage

CSPAN ANNIVERSARYJune 2 marked a special anniversary for the U.S. Senate and for C-SPAN. It was 30th anniversary of the first television coverage of the Senate’s floor debate, carried on C-SPAN2.  C-SPAN2 was launched to carry the video feed from the Senate chamber, live and gavel-to-gavel. An anniversary page highlights the first televised session and some of the significant issues covered over the past 30 years.

C-SPAN and CSPAN2, created and supported by the cable television industry to provide public access to the political process, are available to substantially all Suddenlink customers who have what is commonly known as Expanded Basic TV service.

Sweeps Draw Viewers into Reality Shows

Two cable networks are sponsoring contests that reward winners with chances to win fantasy experiences custom-designed for loyal viewers of popular reality series.

Fans of National Geographic’s “Ultimate Survival Alaska” (Sundays, 8 p.m. CT) may enter the Ultimate Survival Alaska Sweepstakes for a chance at a trip for two to the last frontier, joining cast member Dallas Seavey on an adventure that will include dog mushing, viewing of the Aurora, and more.

Over on TLC, another trip for two is up for grabs for “Cake Boss” and “Bakery Boss” watchers (Mondays, 8 and 9 p.m. CT). The winner of the Cake Boss Kickoff Sweeps will fly with a guest to New York and bake alongside Buddy Valastro at a “Taste of NFL” event held during Super Bowl XLVIII.

Winners of both sweepstakes will be taped during their adventures for possible inclusion on future episodes.

National Geographic and TLC are available to most Suddenlink customers who have what is commonly known as Expanded Basic TV service.

History to Remake ‘Roots’

Cable network History has announced plans to remake  the 1977 miniseries “Roots.” The new version will unfold in eight hours.  The original, based on Alex Haley’s book “Roots: The Saga Of An American Family,” aired over 12 hours on ABC. Deadline yesterday reported details about the new project.

History Channel is available to virtually all Suddenlink customers who have what is commonly known as Expanded Basic TV service.

Dwayne Johnson Signs on for Another Reality Show

According to Variety, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will host a new reality series in development for TNT and TBS. Johnson will help people facing major life challenges learn to help themselves in “Wake Up Call,” which is set to debut in early 2014. Johnson also hosted and mentored contestants on TNT’s competition series “The Hero.”

C-SPAN Student Documentary Contest Returns

 

For its 10th annual 2014 StudentCam competition, C-SPAN is asking middle and high school students to create short video documentaries  based on the question “What’s the Most Important Issue the U.S. Congress Should  Consider in 2014?”

Prizes totaling $100,000 will be awarded to 150 students and 53 teachers. The student with the top video will receive a $5,000 award. His or her teacher will receive $750 to purchase digital video equipment.

Last year Cole Holloway, a student in Suddenlink-served Amarillo, Texas, received an honorable mention award of $250 for his video. Cole’s and all past winners’ videos can be viewed online.

The deadline for entries is Jan. 20.  Winners will be announced in March.

Animal Planet is Matching R.O.A.R. Donations

Animal Planet has partnered with several leading animal organizations to create its R.O.A.R. (Reach Out, Act, Respond) initiative. Today through Nov. 12, the network will match R.O.A.R. donations, which help support such efforts as protecting wild chimpanzees, rescuing and training horses for therapy programs, and saving homeless dogs.  Interested donors can contribute online.

Weather Channel Highlights Preparedness

The Weather Channel has launched “Connect with Weather,” a campaign designed to provide families and communities with weather preparedness information.  Features include a video contest and an interactive website. Local awareness events are also being planned.

The website includes games and activities, a step-by-step guide to creating a disaster plan, and many other resources.

“Connect with Weather” partners include the American Red Cross, American Humane Association, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Portlight Strategies, and Save the Children.
